Blurb
Kate Armour and Evan Maxwell fell hard and fast for each other while attending college. Their once passionate and loving relationship ended when old scars eventually tore them apart. Two years after their breakup, they're each struggling to piece together what went wrong in an attempt to move forward.
Kate, a no-nonsense bartender, must face her past while attempting to focus on her future.
Evan is stifled by his bitter heart, which threatens each and every relationship he attempts after walking away from Kate.
Will life offer them a second chance at love or are old patterns simply too hard to break?
Excerpt
“Evan, can you help me?” Kate asks. She’s standing on her tiptoes, her t-shirt rising up her back, exposing her midsection. I do my best not to stare as I walk towards her. She glances back at me over her shoulder before continuing her request, “Vince put the spare key to his office on the highest shelf of the bar and I can’t reach it.” Her hair smells like strawberries.
“No problem,” I say, easily reaching the key. Just for fun, I dangle it above Kate’s head. She smirks at me, narrowing her eyes as if to say, ‘okay, let’s play.’
Grinning from ear to ear, I ask, “Oh, I’m sorry, can you still not reach them?” Whenever I’m near this woman, all I want to do is tease her, tease her so badly she can hardly contain herself. But, the result is that I can hardly contain myself. Tiny beads of sweat are building along my hairline as I twist the keychain back and forth between my fingers. Kate swats at the key and gives me a fake dirty look. I know her well enough to know she’s not upset at all.
“Ev, c’mon.” Yeah, that’s another thing. She started calling me Ev. It drives me crazy. I can’t take it! Every time she says it, I want to throw her up against the bar and kiss her hard, really hard. I want her all to myself, to make her mine, and yet when the fantasy is over I realize I can’t have her. Not yet.
“All right.” I hand her the keychain and give her a crafty wink. She gives a satisfied smile. “What do you need it for anyway?” I ask.
“I don’t.” She raises an eyebrow at me before walking away to take orders from a large table of college students. My jaw hits the floor as she saunters away, looking back with her signature tease of a grin. This girl is going to be the end of me.
Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book and The Bouquet Toss. Melissa writes books that are sweet, passionate, and have just the right amount of steam in them without being raunchy. It's the perfect "chick flick" in a book. I'm not gonna lie, I was not rooting for Kate and Evan at the start of the book because I felt so much of Evan's emotions having already meet him in the Bouquet Toss and falling hard for Evan. Seeing things from Kate's POV on their relationship quickly changed my mind, and I starting crossing my fingers and toes and praying for their relationship to work out. 4 stars
The book is told in both Kate and Evan’s point of views and I really enjoyed being able to get in both character's heads while I'm reading a book. Their story is told over a span of time from how they meet, fell in love, and the events that happened to eventually make things fall apart.
“That’s the thing about love — it’s full of possibilities. It can lead you down so many different paths. Sure, for some of us, it can lead to sadness and regret. But, for others, well, for others it can lead them to the greatest future they could’ve ever hoped for. Love is the most possible thing in the world.”
This is a beautifully written love story about second chances - a heartwarming love story that will pull at your heartstrings, make you teary eyed, break your heart, and then somehow put you back together again and make you feel complete. For those hopeless romantics out there, this book is for you.
