EXCERPT:
“You owe me ten thousand dollars.”
“Do you want that in cash...or check?” I asked.
“You’re not serious.”
“I’m very serious about clearing my debts.”
He examined me for a few minutes of silence. “I’m having a low-key housewarming party on Saturday.”
“Seems all you do is party.”
“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate on my downtime.”
“Only if it’s all the time.”
“Which it’s not. Stop making statements like we’re best buds who’ve known each other forever. More to the point, watch that mouth around me.”
I cleared my throat, hoping to regain control of the antagonistic tone he nearly succeeded in eliminating. “Were you going to invite me to this party? —because I don’t do social gatherings.”
“Nikki. I get it. I know what you’re going through. The way you’re behaving is not going to do you well. You can’t close yourself off from everyone. Janet told me that you have no other family or friends to be found anywhere. I’m trying to be friendly here. I really don’t want to continuously pull the asshole card to get you out of your bitch mode.”
“Isn’t that a conflict of interest?”
“Your mother isn’t my patient. I’m…doing her a favor.”
“Whatever that means. The answer is no.”
“I just shot out a number. The camera was worth more than that. How are you going to pay off a priceless debt?”
“You overpaid.”
“Are you always such a bitch? Or am I the lone recipient of this attitude?”
“Are you always a cocky ingrate who answers the door for strangers half-dressed?”
“I’m the ungrateful one?” he asked through an incredulous laughter. “Really, Nikki? I see the way your eyes are glued to what I worked my ass off to achieve. See the way you’re drooling at the big gift between my legs, too. I know it doesn’t bother you. I think you’re only pissed that I’m not completely naked right now.” Slowly licking his lips, he stepped forward. His feverish form pressed against me as he looked down at me. He added in a sexually charged drawl, “I know I’m making your pussy the wettest it’s ever been. Just wait. I’ll get you wetter than a banana in a women's prison.”

I just finished this book. Usually I tend to jot some words down or quotes from the book. But I didn't with this one. I'm surprised, speechless only because this was a story that is a little off the norm for me to read. And I've been reading for most of my life. Normally, I'm one to choose those sweet romance novels, the hot, steamy erotic ones or a sexy contemporary. But this one was dark, twisted, and violent at times and broken. My brain is like mush right now.
Nikki is a cutter, a young woman that keeps to herself. She just about has panic attacks when she's around too many people. She's what I would consider to be a hermit. She stays in her house, works from her home and only ventures out to go for a walk or see her terminally ill mother in the hospital. Her mother knows that her time on earth is short and doesn't want Nikki to be left alone. So she puts a plan in place for her to meet Eric. Nikki's mother wants Eric to be there for her daughter when she's gone so she makes a deal with him. I don't want to go too much into detail, becausei want you to experience this story and all the dark, deep places it will take you.
Eric....uh..where do I begin with this hot, controlling, twisted monster. He's become this way because of his dark past. But i could see little pieces of his heart. you could tell that he cares for Nikki and I kept an open mind because he had some series issues. The way people deal/react to tragic, traumatic or difficult times is their way of coping and trying to stay alive in this world. And I'm not one to judge. This goes for both Eric and Nikki. Not everyone has had the sun shine on their every waking moment. I could almost hear "Monster" by Rhiannon singing in my head when I was reading. But I had to continue on, even when I came to some violent scenes that were difficult to read but well written.
Can these two, very tortured, twisted, emotionally struggling people help each other and maybe find some peace and love in their future? Trust me when I say that I was damn sure hoping they would throughout the pages that I turned.
Like I said in the beginning, this isn't my usual type of book to read, but I'm glad that I did. Dark, violent stuff aside, i got into the storyline and wanted to see it to the end. I'd definitely read another of this author's books.
