Review
First thing I have to mention is, I love the blurb of this book! I instantly wanted to read it....love a second chance at romance story, the emotions, the whole opposites attract but meet because they've both experienced a loss, although that loss was different, those circumstances led to them meeting....I just loved the sound of it. After The Rain is just a good story...I liked the plot, the writing, and the characters. I do wish I would have felt a little more "spark" in the beginning of the story between Avelina and her husband Jake, and that Avelina's character wasn't quite so stubborn but, I did completely understand in a way why she couldn't let go. 4 stars.
Avelina meets Jake, a young wrangler and it is whirlwind romance. She doesn't finish high school, gets married, and lives a simple, happy life with Jake on a ranch. Then unexpectedly that love is lost and Avelina does not know what to do. Avelina is lost, not the same fun-loving young girl that she once was, but a bitter, cold woman carrying a heart-full of blame, she just wants to be left alone.
Nate is a young surgeon in LA and he is quickly rising to the top, all work and no play, he is considered to be one of the best. When he loses a patient on the operating table, his career is in question and his confidence shot. Not sure if he made the right decisions while under pressure, Nate goes to his uncles ranch, taking his first break from his career and allowing himself time to think and the hospital board time to investigate. While there, Nate is instantly drawn to Avelina, they share a common bond in way. Avelina makes Nate feel things he hasn't felt in year, and vise versa. They make each other laugh, they are attracted to each other, they like spending time together. Can Avelina let go of the past, find herself, and build a future with Nate...can two opposites really make it work?
"If your willing to look close enough, no matter how devastating the storm may be, after the rain you'll always find new life sprouting in the aftermath."
I enjoyed this book, while I can't say it was one of my favorites, it was good. I think if you loved Renee's other books, you will also enjoy After the Rain. After the Rain was cute, compelling, sweet, emotional, and hopeful...and the epilogue from another characters POV was simply brilliant. Renee is great at making you feel the "feels" and her writing is just always consistently good.
